A guide to training handicrafts the fast way

STUFF THAT'S GOOD TO READ

Being a player that's more after seeking to gain fame as a merchant , it was natural for me to pick a crafting skill and try to max it as fast as possible. Handicrafts was picked for no apparent reason.

After spending some time studying cities and their goods , I finally started training it. It can be maxed in a matter of days , really. Another positive thing is that you'll be spending time in generally one area - a small circle of closely-positioned cities in Northern Europe - Bordeaux , Nantes , Calais , Plymouth , London. The first few ranks are the only which you'll need to train in a completely different area - Valencia , Palma.

I've been doing it mostly on and off after I hit R6 , cause of real life issues limiting my time. However , the entire process seems to be doable in a few days , say 3-4. That is provided you got SOME money to work with ( yes , you'll make some more while training ) and also provided that you DO NOT go for maximum profit but after maximum speed and efficiency. This most often means that as soon as your cargo is full with produced goods , you sell it either in your current city or in the next city you're visiting to buy more materials.

Needed skills :

-> Alcohol Trading <---- Accountant has this , so you better switch to Accountant FIRST and get it.

-> Luxuries Trading <---- Medicine Trader has this.

-> Handicrafts <---- MUST BE FAVORED , meaning you MUST be Medicine Trader.

Optional skills :

-> Wares trading <---- Mineral Trader has this. If you feel like using an extra job card - get this skill before switching to Medicine Trader. I say it's worth it. -> Food Trading <---- Food Trader and Animal Trader have this. If you're going to brew a lot of different alcohol , better take this. In my opinion it's not a viable skill to have in relation to handicrafts , though.

[P] = preparation steps , you better do those before you even think about reading past them.

[T] = trading steps , meaning you go to the city and buy the goods listed , then use the appropriate book and craft said item.

[P] Faro -> Reserve Hoe , go collect common grass. Get about 5-6 hoes.

[P] Palma -> Complete Seasoning Booklet

[P] Hamburg -> Brewing Secrets

[P] Nantes / Malaga -> Medical Preparations Book

[P] Cairo -> Historical Crafts Guide [ requires investment of 400.000 ]

[P] Montpellier -> Brewing Secrets v2 [ requires investment of 800.000 ] ( THIS IS FOR FRENCH PEOPLE ONLY. If you're not french , you might have a hard time finding this book. Best place to look is company stores in Marseille or company stores in general. I've tried to provide alternatives , where possible , to training without this book. )

[T] Bordeaux -> Wine , Complete Seasoning Booklet -> Wine Vinegar

R9 -> R10

[T] Calais -> Dried Apples , Brewing Secrets v2 -> Fruit Brandy

( suggestion - buy about 50 Lumber and then go Oslo <-> Lubeck , buying Stone until you fill your cargo to about 75%-80%. Then sit in Oslo and start making the statues , buying more Lumber as you run out. When out of Stone - repeat Oslo <-> Lubeck )

How do the skill points add? If you start with a low level handicraft like olives, do you get less points than an R5 skill? It is better to make tons of lower level or fewer higher level? Do you know how the skill points are received? Thanks!

depends on. But mostly its better to make the higher level. Idea would be to use the item booster to raise your original rank so you can craft higher level recipes so you can gain much higher exp.

I , for one , made olive oil until R4.
For me the real scale tipper is to aim for recipes that consume 1 trade good only , 1 at a time. This means that in 3 quick olive runs in Valencia - Palma , you can start working on olive oil and rack up at least 350-400 exp.

So no data has been created to see what the gain is from each level increase? I mean if I gain 1 point for each lvl 1, and 2 points for each lvl 3, you could easily be able to figure out which is quicker. I can get 100 olives (r1) to olive oil, but if I can get 60 wines (r5) to brandy, is that better? I know that you get more per level, I just wondered if anyone had the exact data. Looks like something I am going to have to do myself... thanks :)

I've noticed items of 2 ranks under yours , i.e.
You're rank 4 , you make olive oil ( rank 2 ) will net you one experience per success and one experience per great success.

Having a difference of 3 ranks will yield one experience only on great success.

So after going from r4-r7 I have a fair amount of data. I have found that Elder (2.36) and Bronze (2.20) have the highest skill point per unit I have come across so far. If you are not English or French, the obvious issue is the amount you can buy. Wheat gives the least skill points no matter what you make (.26 beer, .27 akvavit, .29 whiskey) and therefore makes the Bordeaux route less productive as Nantes really does nothing for your run. The Valencia to Palma route is by far the most productive if you are French as you can invest and get Raisins. Raisins (1.2) to wine and wine (.96) to brandy gives a great combo. I donít have enough data to discuss going wine to wine vinegar instead. I will update as I get more data...

My original post was deleted, due to the auto refresh (extremely annoying). So I will make this short - from r7-r10 the best route is Bordeaux to Nantes. I tried all the other routes and got the data (bronze, dried apples, etc.) and in terms of total exp the Bordeaux route is best. Las Palmas to Madiera is good, but coconuts aren't great and you can't get enough raisins to make up for the lack of wine or brandy. In the end grind Bordeaux to Nantes. Don't even go into Nantes - the wheat doesn't give you enough exp to warrent the time it takes. Go to port and leave again. You will get back to Bordeaux quicker to get the real points - Elder, wine, brandy, and raisins. Take wine into brandy and make as much sherry as you can. This is better than wine vinegar. Elder goes to whatever medicine, which isn't great exp due to low amount you can purchase but very good overall. I have all the data if anyone is really interested. I also found that level has nothing to do with exp gains. The 2x event was interesting on data as well, as not all were 2x... Happy leveling!

Was at R7 last night and got really bored of the bronze runs so I decided to try something different... I basically went from Maderia/Porto/Bordeux buying wine and grapes, Id have about 100 wine and 100 grapes. Converted the grapes into wine and then wine-->red vinegar..... for every 15 wine converted id get 50 xp which was huge I was making 600 xp per trip. The distance might be a negative but with my pizzas for vigor I was throwing my hands back and watching it pile up.

To add to this, I went from 6-9 in about 8 hours yesterday just by sailing from Madeira out accross the server line, and back. I had help from a few friends cause they want cheap furniture... I just did raisins to wine to wine vinegar the whole time.

For R6-R7 you can do the Saints-George/Benin/Sao Tome route in West Africa for Coconuts, assuming you have it unlocked. I had R3 luxury trading and was able to purchase 80 coconuts at a time and it went up very fast...if you're not Portuguese you can't buy coconuts in Madeira, only Las Palmas. Great guide, many thanks! And Habana is the other city that gives the Brewery Secrets v2, wikia says 800,000 but I received it at 780,000 contribution. Again, assuming you have the Caribbean unlocked...
